Censorship

March 16th, 2008

Apichatpong Weerasethakul made a wise choice to screen his movie “Syndromes” with the censored parts replaced by black frames. The longest part of which runs 7 minutes. The people on the Thai censorship board were saying “his parents should feel ashamed of the depiction of their lives”. They also brought that old canard out of the closet that “it harmed the nation’s image and its institutions.” I just have never been able to understand the mindset that actually is convinced that it can dictate to others what is good and bad. Where do they learn this moral arrogance? I say, the censorship board is an utter disgrace, should be ashamed of itself and taints Thailand’s image and its institutions.
